“Free The Boeung Kak 15″

Phnom Penh, 28th of May, 2012 – Approximately 150 persons gathered in front of the National Assembly this morning in a peaceful demonstration calling on authorities to free the 15 Boeung Kak Lake protesters who are currently behind bars. The demonstrators called for the immediate release of the fifteen people arrested last week, in relation to the ongoing Boeng Kak land conflict. Among the Boeung Kak fifteen, thirteen women were charged and immediately sentenced to prison last week, in total disrespect of fair trial rights, and two protesters, Ly Chanary and Sao Saroeun, were arrested while taking pictures of the Court of Justice while the trial took place. The Venerable Loun Sovath, the activist monk, was also arrested on the scene and is facing charges of incitement for his work supporting victims of land rights abuses in Cambodia.
Six days before the communal elections in Cambodia, citizens and civil society profess discontent concerning the latest tragic and unlawful events to unfold. Holding Lotus flowers as a sign of peaceful protest, demonstrators demand not only the freedom of the 15, but also for an end to be put to the circle of violence against protesters and activists that has been plaguing Cambodia over the last few months.
