Celebrating a Facebook Milestone

On September 13, 2013, in Uncategorized, by Admin
The U.S. Embassy Facebook page recently surpassed 100,000 Likes! That’s a huge milestone which reflects the significant number of Cambodians who want a direct link with the U.S. Embassy to get information and provide feedback. And it’s an indication that more and more Cambodians are taking part in a transformational time in history.
It was a great pleasure to celebrate our Facebook milestone with some of our most active users.
To celebrate this exciting milestone, I invited a dynamic group of young Cambodians for a Facebook party this week. This is a group of people who understand the importance of social media and who have been active participants on our Facebook page. At the celebration, we enjoyed music and games while sharing stories about our social media experiences, and posted comments on the Embassy’s Facebook page.
At the party, everyone wore a T-shirt which read, “I am the U.S. Embassy’s 100,000th Facebook Fan.”
Some of our Facebook fans play a trivia game.
The ability to communicate and share information on the Internet has changed the way we think about the world — and the way Cambodians think about their participation in society. Highway 4 is no longer the main road to Sihanoukville! The Internet “highway” provides Cambodians with an instant connection with what is happening almost anywhere in Cambodia. And for me, social media and the Internet are opportunities for a new kind of diplomacy. In a not too distant past, diplomats like myself would travel around the country to give speeches and meet people, reaching perhaps a hundred people at a time. Today, social media enables me and the U.S. Embassy to engage directly with Cambodian people from all walks of life, from all over the country, at virtually any time.
Many thanks to all of our great Facebook fans who took the time to celebrate the milestone of 100,000 “likes” with us.
In this new age of connectivity and information, we as individuals have greater responsibility and greater opportunity. We must be smart and sophisticated in our consumption of news, relying on sources we find trustworthy while always being alert for bias, error, and exaggeration. If we do that, the Internet empowers us to become better educated, more productive and more effective citizens.
The party games created a little friendly rivalry between our Facebook fans!
I am thrilled so many Cambodians are taking advantage of online resources, and I hope you will continue to follow my blog and our Facebook page as points of reference for useful and interesting information about the United States and U.S. Embassy activities. One hundred thousand Facebook fans is great start, but this time next year I hope to see 200,000 Likes on our page!
A little confetti shower to celebrate an exciting milestone! I hope to see everyone back again next year to celebrate 200,000 fans!
